This time I got a weird error when installing ESXi 5.1 on a boot via SAN disk.
The error was: Could not format a VMFS volume

Turns out that it was related with multipath and failover policy of the storage I’ve been using.
It’s an EMC Clariion by the way.

To make it works we needed to change the failover mode from 4 to 1.
What is weird about it is that failover mode 4 is not documented on the EMC website (it’s always possible that I did not look at the right place).

VMware has also a KB (2068) stating about this configuration.

After this change the installation proceeded without any issue.

Bye.
